Unable to access your Weebly website, and instead see the dreaded 404 error message?
A website outage is scary. In this post, we will go over the common potential causes of this, and how to fix it.
First, let's go over the possible causes.
When it comes to diagnosing error 404s, the culprit is generally in one of three areas.
It's usually Hosting or Domain related.
Weebly websites are all hosted on Weebly servers, so the issue could be on Weebly's end.
Note: if you're using Weebly through a third-party like BlueHost or HostGator, that is a different platform altogether and hosting is provided by the company running Weebly. In this case, your best bet is to contact the company you use to access Weebly directly. If you're using BlueHost, contact them.
The second culprit is the domain DNS linking.
If you've recently connected a new domain, especially if it's one from a non-Weebly source (like GoDaddy) then this is likely to be the issue. You may also see errors if you've recently configured DNS (Domain Name Server) settings for that domain.
If you're using a Weebly domain, then the domain is likely not the reason for this 404.
Note: It's generally considered Best Practice to not have your domain and hosting be with the same provider.
So now that we've discussed the possible errors, let's talk about how to fix this.
First, open your Weebly website, and try re-publishing the entire website.
Sometimes, this fixes the problem permanently.
If re-publishing doesn't work, you'll have to contact Weebly support directly as this is likely an issue on their end.
However, if you recently connected a new domain or made DNS changes, then you should also contact the domain provider.
